View from the Weisdale Hill, Shetland Isles, UK

The humble derelict old croft house, that sits alone at the top of the hill with the commanding view. I used a bit of artistic licence to add a track leading the viewer into the painting, cross the gap in the rumbled old wall, to stand in the old yard which still grows a little greener than the rest, beside the forgotten buildings take in the peace of the spot, the sweep of the hill down to its foot, follow the road and the buildings along it and look out over the voe to the far islands

Heavenly Skies and History, Nesbister Bod

This Painting shows the Bod of Nesbister. A Bod was a building constructed to accommodate fishermen and their equipment during the fishing season. This bod, the Bod of Nesbister was built in 1844 by the Shetland firm, Hay and Company, as a base for their fish processing operation. When the fish were landed they were dried on the stony beach, then salted and exported. In its heyday the Bod of Nesbister would have been a hive of activity of long days and hard work. The Bod can be accessed today through the Shetland Amenity Trust who manage it. The Bod is available as short-term basic camping accommodation.

Last Rays Over Hildasay

The Painting shows the last rays of a setting winter sun over island of Hildasay.  It is thought the island takes it's name from the Old Norse Hildasey, meaning battle island.  This small island was  once a hive of activity with an exceptionally high quality granite quarry on the island.  The remains of the railway line used to transport the granite from the quarry to the harbour can still be seen.  The granite was used both locally and exported, as far as Australia to be used in many fine buildings.  Other industry on the island included the curing of herring.  Up until 1891 the island supported a population of 30 people, now the island is uninhabited apart from a summer house on the island.  Some of the past and the present dwellings can be seen illuminated on the skyline.

Also in the Painting, in the shelter of the skerry, there is a Shetland Yoal, a traditional clinker built boat used traditionally in the Shetland Isles, tied up for shelter before the evening brings the darkening storm.

Northern Lights Over Mousa Broch

Mousa Broch is the finest preserved example of an iron-age broch or round tower in the Shetland Isles. It is at 44 feet (13m) the tallest standing in the world and one of the best-preserved prehistoric buildings in Europe. If you came to the Shetland Isles and take a trip to the island of Mousa you can climb the staircase of this mighty old building that has stood from approximately 100 BC and take in the view from this centuries old building. If the stones could speak what tales would they tell, of troubled times, of peaceful times, youth and age, warriors and farmers, the Norse Sagas mention the Broch as a hide-out for eloping lovers. The Broch is now home to a colony of Storm Petrels, small birds that are out on the sea by day and return to the Broch as darkness falls. If you visit at night, hear the Broch come alive with the voices of the seabirds as they return. Perhaps on a night visit you will witness the 'Northern Lights' the magical Aurora Borealis as they shimmer and dance and weave across the night sky. Aurora Borealis named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for wind, Boreas, are a natural light display in the sky particularly in the high latitudes. Here in the Shetland Isles we call these the Northern Lights or the Mirrie Dancers, a truly magical experience.

Sunset Over Midwick

The viewer stands at 'Midwick' on a croft (farm) in South Whiteness in the Shetland Isles, looking toward the west, with the peninsula of Stromness and the island of North Havra darkened by the setting sun. On the left in the far distance is a part of the Island of Hildasay. Take in the still and peace and the quiet air of a tranquil Shetland evening.
